For 20 years, Washington, Pennsylvania based Western Edge Seafood has been providing its wholesale, retail and food service customers with high quality seafood. The company was started in 1986 by Founder and CEO John Victoria but his efforts began long before that.
Making the transition from the restaurant to the seafood industry, Washington native Victoria traveled around the world to learn everything he could about sourcing before securing his first customer. Investing considerable time to establish sourcing relationships with high quality providers has proven to be invaluable. Western Edge has unique sourcing relationships in 12 countries around the world on four continents.
For many years, Western Edge had the reputation of being a premier supplier of fresh seafood. Concerned with the consistency of fresh supply, along with logistical problems of getting product to the market fresh, the company invested heavily in R&D to address these concerns.
During this same period, dramatic innovations were occurring in the frozen seafood industry. These advanced technologies for catching, freezing and packaging seafood allowed seafood companies to deliver a frozen product that was fresher and more wholesome than fresh. Western Edge recognized that this was a fresh new way of doing frozen seafood and the future of the industry. In a bold move, the company directed its resources to this new technology to launch its frozen seafood line.
The company undertook its frozen program with the same dedication, workmanship and quality commitment as it had for fresh. It did not take long for Western Edge to take an industry leadership position for premium frozen seafood. Today, Western Edge is fully committed to its premium frozen seafood lines.
These frozen products have provided tremendous flexibility and cost-savings to Western Edge customers. This change in business strategy has also resulted in tremendous growth for the company. Recent demand for premium frozen products has been seen in published polls, where suppliers and consumers rated frozen higher than fresh for quality.
Taking the next step in addressing sustainable quality seafood, Western Edge invested globally in aquaculture to compliment its ocean-caught business. By investing directly in production facilities, Western Edge is able secure a consistent quality of supply for its customers.
Western Edge Seafood also offers a wide selection of packaged retail products to further enhance value. IVP, colored retail bags in different sizes and product offerings, and microwaveable trays are some of the value-added options. The microwaveable trays sold under the Savory Seafood Grille brand label is another example of Western Edge innovation. These entrées come in five different varieties and make a delicious meal in just three minutes.
